* ANNOUNCEMENTS

We are saddened to announce the passing of long-time member Dr. George Weiss. George joined the club in1979, was president, and was influential in organizing the tennis outings for the club, proceeds from which our student scholarship program was created. We will greatly miss George.
Our prayers go out to his friends and family.

Dr. George H. Weiss

Dr. George Henry Weiss (Z”L), born June 22, 1927, passed away peacefully at his home on October 11, 2023. Dr. Weiss grew up in Upper Darby, PA. He was the son of the late Philip Weiss and Bertha Weiss (Née Bruner). Dr. Weiss was a beloved Family Doctor who practiced for 52 years in East Norriton, PA. He is survived by his loving family: son Steven (Julia); his stepchildren Sherry, Ross, Scott, and Rainer; his grandchildren Julian (Molly), Naomi, Simon, Sophia and Arianna; and his great-grandchild George.

Dr. Weiss was a devoted family man. He had a beautiful relationship with his soulmate and second wife Dr. Jaqueline Shachter Weiss. They were happily married for over 38 years.

After recovering from a severe car accident while in service with the Army in 1945 and being honorably discharged, Dr. Weiss graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from the University of Pennsylvania. He pursued medical studies at the University of Basil Switzerland where he learned German. He received his Medical Doctorate from the University of Munich, Germany in May, 1958.

After Dr. Weiss returned to the US, he passed the boards and interned at Montgomery Hospital in 1958. He opened a medical practice in East Norriton in 1960 and served his community for 52 years. He was merrily greeted on the street by his patients long after he retired.

He was an avid tennis player and one of the original founding members of Frog Hollow Tennis Club in Lansdale, PA. In the winter, he enjoyed skiing in the Poconos and out west with his extended family.  He was a supportive member of Rotary International for over 34 years.

Dr. Weiss loved classical music and was a regular attendee of the Philadelphia Orchestra. His favorites were Mozart and Brahms.

Dr. Weiss believed in the importance of connecting with people and always saw the good in others. He had a great sense of humor. He had lengthy conversations about the news and ended them by saying “we’ve solved all the world’s problems.” He donated to many important causes including Congregation Or’Ami in Lafayette Hill. He inspired everyone he met. Dr. George Weiss truly lived as a shining example of what it means to be human. He touched many lives and was loved by everyone who knew him.

Family and friends are invited to his Memorial Service on Sunday October 15, 2023 at 2pm GOLDSTEINS' ROSENBERG'S RAPHAEL-SACKS 6410 N. Broad St. Phila PA 19126.

Ronald McDonald House Zip Tab Collecting
Please Help the Ronald McDonald House

The Board has decided to ask our members to collect aluminum can zip tabs or 'pop tabs'. These can be found on not only soda cans but all sorts of canned drinks.  The local chapter of the Ronald McDonald House still collects them to turn in for recycling and proceeds go to help local families by paying family expenses to stay will their child is in the hospital.  Start a jar, they add up.  At the end of the year we will accumulate our collections and donate them to the Ronald McDonald House. Please see Vanessa Cossari for more information

DON BENN --  PENNSYLVANIA STATE CONSTABLE

Last week, the club was treated to a discussion from DON BENN, the Pennsylvania Constable for our area. Don pointed out that not many people are aware of the role constables play in law enforcement activities. The constable function in Pa. was created in 1664 and became an official part of the state government in 1787. Ho stated that Montgomery County is unique in the state due to its extremely large number of governing bodies in the county, which adds to the difficulty in setting up constables. The position, although elected, is not funded directly by the government. Fees and service charges fund their activities, but many of their expenses are on them.
The most important activity they participate in, is election night protection. It is their responsibility to protect voters and pole workers. These activities are covered by the Constable and the several deputies they appoint. Montco has only 35 constables.
Other activities that constables cover were revised in a video Don presented. They include serving arrest warrants, warnings, eviction notices, and livestock control, among others. The source of their assignments is the district courts.
We thank Don for his informative talk.

MAUI Assistance
Letter to President Mary:

Dear Mary ,
Many have asked how our clubs can support our friends and Rotarians after the tragedy in Hawaii.  I wanted to share this information in case you haven't seen it on Facebook.  We know that the money will be well stewarded and go directly where it is most needed guided by Rotarians. Thank you for your generosity.  You can forward this email to your club members so they have direct donation information if they would like to contribute personally or put it in your club newsletter.

A note from Mark Merriam, District Governor Rotary District 5000 - Hawaii, USA
August 9, 2023
Aloha:
Today has been a tragic day for our families and friends on the Island of Maui. The fires across the island have changed lives forever. Truly devastating. Our sympathy, thoughts and prayers are with everyone impacted. Rotary members are people of action, and we can take immediate action. As we come together to recover and rebuild, we need to support each other. We need to Create Hope for Maui. Through our Hawai’i Rotary District 5000 Foundation, a relief fund has been established. Foundation President Dave Hamil and Treasurer Sharon Amano will handle all donations. A committee will be organized shortly to find the greatest needs for the distribution of monies. A single fund will be the most helpful over time to provide the most significant benefits.
Please consider donating to this special fund. (https://bit.ly/3YuAIwG)
