HAPPY BIRTHDAY SUNANDA
HAPPY BIRTHDAY LIZ
From Diane Helm
Hi all — We’re planning a garden work day on October 24 to prepare the garden for winter and plant bulbs for spring. We hope many of you will be able to help.
In the meantime, there is still some weeding to do, so Diane will be there on Saturday mornings from 8–9 a.m. Anyone willing to join her for an hour will be most welcome.
Thanks for your willingness to help in this community garden.
REFLECTIONS FROM AN ATTENDEE TO CAMP NEIDIG WHO OUR CLUB SPONSORED BACK IN THE 70's, AND ALAN'S RESPONSE
My wife and I were having dinner with some fellow residents of our retirement community here in Tucson, AZ when I noticed our friends were both wearing Rotary shirts. One thing lead to another and I chimed that I had enjoyed an amazing experience sponsored by our local Rotary Club in Pennsylvania "back in the day”. Yes, it was the Rotary Club of Norristown that sponsored my attendance at Camp Neidig during the summer of 1968. That was between my junior and senior year at Methacton.
Reflecting back I realize the experience at that leadership camp provided a wonderful foundation for the rest of my life. It also exposed me to meeting and living with people I didn’t know before the Camp - a valuable experience when I headed off to college a year and a half later. And I found new friends that I encountered again during my senior year when we faced each other in sporting events.
That experience was punctuated by my visit to the Reading Hospital on the next to last day of Camp after a dove for a line drive in foul territory in left field during the championship softball game. Fortunately I still have a full head of hair and the scar from the cut and stitches remains well hidden.
I have been in leadership positions all my adult life and I credit Camp Neidg with helping to prepare me for those experiences. I can still remember standing before your Club recounting the Camp Neidig experience - a high school kid speaking to my community’s “movers and shakers” - trying my best to thank the Club for the opportunity. I think I did an OK job that day. Now I just want to reiterate my appreciation for your Club’s sponsorship of a memorable and valuable experience. Thank you!
Thank you very much for your testimonial about Camp Neidig. It’s great to hear that your memories and experiences are as vivid today as they were "back in the day".
Recently, we met the new Superintendent of the Norristown Area School District, and told him about this program and he’s interested in what Rotary can do for students - including "Camperships" to Camp Neidig.
Thanks for sharing your story. I’ll be reading your email at this week’s meeting and I’d like your permission to share it via SPOKE (our weekly newsletter) and the Rotary Club of Norristown web-site.

Last Thursday we heard for one of our own members, SUNANDA CHARLES, Executive Director of the Norristown Hospitality Center. Sunanda gave us an update on the progress towards their new permanent site, and the difficulties they have experienced in making this move. The NHC had been in its previous site for 26 years until it was forced to relocate when a new owner of the property took over. Then began the tedious tasks of finding a new site, dealing with zoning board, and reassuring a skeptical community. This all had to be accomplished without totally disrupting the lives of the 500 persons that they served on a regular basis. There was a lot of uncertainty in the process, but throughout , Sunanda relates that she always had conviction that the Center would not shut down. She told of a couple of possibilities that came up, but excessive cost and other factors kept blocking finding a solution.
Finally this year a great location was found on Lafayette St. in a building that had been purposed for a movie studio, and although costly renovations would be needed, it was decided to proceed with this location. She worked with the community, zoning, and logistics people and is now in the process of obtaining a mortgage for the facility.
To finalize the plan she got previous Board members to meet and assist with the process. She is very thankful for the support and assistance from our Club member Jack Rule, who has bees associated with the Norristown Hospitality Center for many years. They hope to be using the facility by winter.
Along with a new location comes a new model for operation, one that is more modernized and welcoming, but it also brings the need for added financial support to the front.
