Our speaker , EMILY BAKHITAH, from RISE TO SHINE EDUCATION FOUNDATION, shared her compelling personal story about growing up in a family of nine in a poor Kenyan village where genital mutilation was practiced and her sister was married at 13. By sheer luck she was given a scholarship to boarding school around age 8 that changed her trajectory. Education opened up a world beyond her wildest imagination. She was studying to be an accountant, but changed course when her sister begged her for help to get educated too. Motivated by gratitude, she now works for Rise to Shine providing scholarships for students like herself. The organization pays school fees, tuition, and uniform expenses for boys and girls so they can also have better lives.
